Repeated Multiplication.. or in other words " Exponentiation " What does exponent mean? The exponent E of any real number R represents how many times were R multiplied by itself. The term exponents entered Math in the 17th century by the French Mathematician "Rene Decartes" . Example: 9 to the power 2, 7 to the power 3 and 2 to the power 5. The perimeter of any square equals the summation of the lengths of the four sides. and since the four sides are equal in length, so the perimeter equals 4 times the length of each side.. Look we just a repeated Addition Process, we just did Multiplication. To find the Area of the square, you multiply one side by itself, so you repeat the multiplication, you just did exponentiation. Note: We write numbers in the exponential formula to facilitate their study. Exercise: Re-write the following expressions in the exponential formula: I) 3*3*3 II) 8*8*8*8 III) 7*7 IV) 5*5*5*5 Answers: I) 3 to the power 3 (three cubed). II) 8 to the power 4. III) 7 to the power 2 (seven squared). IV) 5 to the power 4.
